When thinking about the events that occur in the Whale Rider, I wonder if things would have been different if her twin brother survived. If he survived, he would have become the leader of their group by default... would she still have had the drive and motivation to become the leader she so badly wanted to become?

  1. That is very interesting. I wonder how the ancestors would've responding to the brother being leader, it seems that it was Paikea's destiny. Great thinking.

  2. That's a great question, very thought-provoking. I'm not sure anybody would be good enough for the grandfather! Mimi

  3. That is a really good question, I think if he had survived Paikea would have been even more in the shadows. It's hard to say whether she wouldve have the same drive. I think the brother dying was symbolic in that he wasn't as strong as his sister and even though he wouldve been brought up as the leader and as this great person, Im not sure if he would have actually been strong/brave enough to fill that role as Paikea had.

  6. This also is a very good question Amanda. What would have happened? I think that because she was the only one who survived she felt she was destined to be the Whale Rider. Yet, we must keep into consideration that her culture held onto historical patriarchal views thus I believe if her brother were to survive it would have been harder, if she were indeed the Whale Rider, to viewed in such a way.

  7. Wow, this question didn't even pop up in my mind. I don't think things will be different if the twin brother survived. She will still strive and want to learn all the things that she wasn't suppose too. Even if the brother got the leader role I feel like she will still be destine to be the leader.

  8. I have this question lingering me as well after watching the movie. I agree with Melanie. To me, I think that things will be a little different if her twin brother did not pass away. I feel that she will have a harder time with more complex problems within the family especially towards her brother. However, I also think she will still continue to have the drive and the motivation to make a leader. But I am not sure if she can become a leader as easily if her brother were to survive and got the leader as default since her grandfather is also stick very closely to the traditional culture.
